BETHEL – A recommendation on the possible return of interscholastic football to Telstar High School was placed on hold until Monday, Nov. 8, by the SAD 44 Board of Directors at Tuesday’s regular monthly meeting.

According to Superintendent David Murphy, the board held off from discussing any recommendation or voting on the issue because only a portion of the ad hoc committee was present, and cost figures need to be available before a decision can be made.

“There were only 10 of 17 members present, and it was decided a full representation of the committee is needed in order to get a true picture of how they all feel about the issue. Also the board wants cost figures as to what it will cost to reinstate and run the program as well as some recommendations as to where the money will come from,” said Murphy, “So it was decided to table the issue until the board’s next meeting on Nov. 8.”

The last time Telstar ran a football program was from the school’s inception in the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s.

After tabling the football issue, the board voted unanimously to approve the superintendent’s nomination of Betty Roker to the position of secretary at Telstar Middle School.

Roker comes well-recommended from her current position as a school secretary in Yarmouth and has also served as an administrative assistant in the Gorham school system.

“We are very fortunate to have found someone with her background and are pleased to have Betty coming to the district,” said Murphy.

Finally, the board congratulated Coach Jim Lunney and his 2004 Telstar High School golf team for winning the Maine state interscholastic golf championship.
