BATH – Doris A. Berry, 96, of Whiskeag Road, died Saturday, Oct. 16, at Hillhouse in Bath.

She was born in Auburn on March 12, 1908, the daughter of Walter C. and Alta (Wentworth) Hill.

As young girls, she and her sister, Bertha, studied and played classical violin. Later they took up the fiddle and the ukulele.

She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1926. Doris married Arthur L. Berry in 1930. They moved to Bath, where together they ran A.L. Berry Oil Company and Marina until their retirement.

Doris was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over fifty years. She and Arthur were generous benefactors of numerous non-profit organizations throughout their lives. Among those organizations were the Shriners Children’s Hospitals, the Coastal Humane Society, of Brunswick, and Opportunity Farm in New Gloucester.

For many years, they made their home beside Whiskeag Creek in Bath where Doris loved to watch wildlife. She was especially fond of the birds along that part of Merrymeeting Bay and kept active bird feeding stations around her home. The couple spent many hours on the Kennebec River in their boat.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Berry, of Auburn; four nieces, Marjorie Coleman, of Mechanic Falls, Jane Harlow, of Auburn, Joyce Laatz, of Yarmouth, Nancy Massucco, of Center Conway, N.H.; one nephew, Ralph L. Hodgkins, of Westport Island; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Her entire family wishes to recognize the friendship, care, and joy that her neighbor, Bob Thurston, brought to her life.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Arthur L. Berry; one brother, Clarence; two sisters, Elva L. Cox, and Bertha E. Hodgkins.
