ACADIA NATIONAL PARK (AP) – Investigators continued to search for a rock climber on Monday who disappeared in the ocean off Mount Desert Island after he jumped into the surf to retrieve one of his climbing shoes.

Emil Lin, 21, of Hampden, and Joe Rudnicki, 21, also of Hampden, were climbing Otter Cliffs Sunday afternoon when Lin unclipped himself from a climbing rope and jumped into the water after some of his equipment fell in the water.

Park officials said he swam about 100 feet off shore to get a shoe. After swimming back, he wasn’t able to hang onto the rocks, said Kevin Cochary, a park ranger. He slipped off and submerged in the tides.

Three Coast Guard vessels, the Bar Harbor harbor master’s office and two sightseeing boats motored back and forth offshore looking for signs of Lin after his disappearance was reported. A helicopter also participated in the search.

The accident occurred during high tide, according to park rangers.
