BIDDEFORD – Georgia Taxiarchis, 95, of Portland, died Sunday morning, Oct. 17, at Southern Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Sparta, Greece, March 24, 1909, the daughter to George and Julie Lazarus Martini. In 1922, she married Nicholas Taxiarchis. He died April 20, 1940. She was employed in New York City as a fur finisher for many years.
She retired in 1971. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lewiston. Among her interests were crocheting, where she made beautiful handiwork. She also loved to garden.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Taxiarchis, of Portland; one son, Louis N. Taxiarchis and his wife, Catherine, of West Buxton; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Taxiarchis, of Bar Mills, Nicholas Taxiarchis, of Portland, and John and his wife, Elena Taxiarchis, of Boston; and one great-grandaughter, Christina Taxiarchis.
She was predeceased by one son, John Taxiarchis.
