LEWISTON – Once again, the city clerk’s office is appealing to registered Lewiston Republicans to help at polling places next month.

“We need to hire about 15 additional Republican election clerks,” said City Clerk Kathy Montejo. “For this election, we have had several of our regular Republican election clerks who are unable to work at this year’s election.”

Election clerks who work at the polling places must be enrolled as a Democrat or Republican, according to state law. The law also requires that there be an equal number from each party.

Election workers are paid $40 per shift, and dinner is provided. A training session is also offered. Two shifts are available – from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. until the polls close, about 9:30 p.m.

Election clerks will check in voters on the incoming voting list, distribute ballots, monitor the voting machines and do other related tasks.

The city is expecting 25,725 registered voters to cast ballots this year, Montejo said.

Interested residents should contact the city clerk’s office at 784-2956, extension 214. Election worker application forms are also available at www.ci.lewiston.me.us on the city’s Web site.
