The Palesky proposal will negatively affect many public services, but the one that concerns me is libraries.

Try observing the children’s room at the Lewiston Public Library for a few non-school hours. You will see children of all ages and income levels using books and computers they do not have at home.

Many volunteers read in day cares through the BookReach Program sponsored by Lewiston and Auburn public libraries in an effort to show children the joys of books.

Statistics show that children exposed to books early do better in school. If library services are cut, those who need them most will be deprived. Later, when the same kids need extra help, taxpayers will pick up the bills through schools.

Adults need library services too – without service fees. Again, those least able to pay will suffer from cuts or fees for services.

The Palesky proposal could close or curtail services to libraries statewide. Free public libraries are a New England institution that help to keep our nation a well-informed democracy.

We must vote no on the Palesky proposal. There must be a better way to lower taxes in this wonderful state without drastic cuts to public services.
