After reading the Sunday Sun Journal’s Oct. 3 nonpartisan pros and cons on the upcoming property tax vote, I decided to do some homework on my own.

I am a homeowner in a small town east of the Lewiston-Auburn area. I, therefore, have a few services provided by the town. I pay for trash pickup. I am on a drilled well. We have no police protection, but an excellent voluntary fire company. There is a K-6 grade school in the town.

My homework consisted of researching my property taxes over a five-year period. Year 2000: tax $1,435; 2001: $1,478; 2002: $1,573; 2003: $1,768; 2004: $2,017.

Comparing the year 2000 to 2004, I have experienced a 40 percent increase in my property tax from my town over the past five years.

I am not advocating or promoting either side of the issue; however, I am suggesting your readers “do the math” prior to closing the curtain on Nov. 2.
