Several get-out-the-vote organizations would have us believe that the worst thing that can happen is to not vote and regret who gets elected into office. While this is unfortunate, it is far worse to not realize you’re voting for something that you don’t support.

The Perspective article on Oct. 17 by William H. Slavick gives us a good insight into how people are duped into voting for the very things that they abhor.

This article attempts to justify a Catholic vote for John Kerry by stating arguments which range from tenuous to outright absurd, even stating that a Bush re-election would assure the “denial of dignity, suffering or death for hundreds of millions, even billions of people.” The author is welcome to his opinion, but a rational person can see right through the extremely strained logic which he must go through to reach such an absurd conclusion. The fact is that Democrats repeatedly vote contrary to what Catholics believe, but they somehow fool the voters and get re-elected.

For example, several judicial nominations put forward by President Bush would have passed by Senate vote so the Democrats prevented a vote from occurring with a filibuster. The vast majority of Democrats, including Sen. Kerry, repeatedly and consistently voted against having judges who may have the audacity to be pro-life or Catholic.

Election year rhetoric intentionally clouds the issues but when the candidates voting records are viewed, the difference in party policy becomes crystal clear.
