MANCHESTER – James B. Halligan, 73, of Appletree Lane, died Thursday, Oct. 21, at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta, after a long illness.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1930 in Warren, the son of Michael and Mary (Connell) Halligan.

“Jim” graduated from Warren High School in 1948, and had worked for Starrett’s Mill in Warren, Goudy and Stevens Shipyard in East Boothbay and Bath Iron Works.

In 1956, Jim began his 37 year-long career at Central Maine Power Co. as a meter reader in Rockland, advancing to the Lewiston District as a Heating Advisor, where he was promoted to Division Heating Advisor. He was named the Lewiston District Office Manager before moving to the general office in Augusta as the company’s liason to the Public Utilities Commission. He retired from C.M.P. in 1994 as the Augusta District Manager.

Throughout his career, Jim served on several industry committees as a company representative to American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Electric Council of New England and Edison Electric Institute. He was also an active member of the company’s employee golf and bowling leagues.

As a young man, Jim played baseball for Warren High School and after graduation played for various teams in the Knox-Lincoln Twilight leagues. In 1952, he was drafted as a pitcher for the Batavia Clippers in Batavia, N.Y., a minor league team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. While a resident of Owls Head, he served as a town selectman. In Lewiston he was appointed to the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals and in Manchester served on the Manchester Budget Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie Moore Halligan, of Manchester; two daughters, Joan Ladakakos, of Saco, and Linda Halligan; two grandchildren, Richard Cluff and Lauren Halligan; a brother, Paul Halligan, of Gardiner, and Joyce Staples, of Moriah, N.Y.
