FDR said, “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Well, let me tell you what I fear the most if the Palesky tax cap does not pass. I can see the governor and his pals in Augusta, our city manager and his subordinate elected officials and the superintendent of schools and his rubber stamp committee patting themselves on the back, saying we must be doing a good job. Let’s continue spending tomorrow’s tax revenue.

We need to keep in mind that the voters in this state voted to mandate the state to pay 55 percent of education immediately. The governor says, oh well, I’ll try to phase it in over five years. The governor just doesn’t get the message.

On the local front, the citizens of Lewiston, in their frugal generosity, approved spending up to $3 million to save the ice arena from extinction. City administrator Jim Bennett, on the other hand, says, if the citizens will spend $3 million, why not ask for more. And I’m sure he won’t stop there. Next he will want to build a parking garage before he gives it all away. Of course that remains to be seen.

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the mentality displayed above. We need to take control of our destiny.

I am voting yes on the tax cap.

Peter Grenier, Lewiston
