NEW GLOUCESTER – New hours of operation at the transfer station will go into effect on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Selectmen took action last week to reconfigure the open hours for public access at the Bald Hill Road transfer station, maintaining the same hours for employees but spreading out the days.

The new plan scales back open hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday when the station was open until 8 p.m., and adds limited hours on Friday.

The new hours are as follows:

• Tuesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, selectmen established new disposal fees for some items. The transfer station will accept plywood at $2 per sheet; tires without rims at $2 each; racing tires at $2; and tires with rims at $3.

In addition, selectmen authorized closing the transfer station when the waste packer is filled. New Gloucester’s solid waste is hauled to Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. for disposal.

In the past year, heavy use of the station, especially on Saturday, resulted in insufficient space in the packer to accommodate the public’s waste stream.

Trash was left on the floor of the transfer station until the packer could be hauled to Auburn for disposal. Future expansion of the transfer station is part of a selectmen-initiated plan.
