LEWISTON – An attempt to get Lewiston voters out to the polls on Tuesday might have muddied things up.

An unidentified get-out-the-vote effort was using an old ward map and list of polling places to encourage voting, said City Clerk Kathy Montejo. The city changed the map and polling places this summer and mailed postcards to registered voters to let them know.

“Essentially, this group was undoing what we had done,” Montejo said.

Representatives from the group contacted Montejo’s office Friday, saying that some voters had challenged their information.

“I guess people were waving the postcards we sent out at the guy, saying, That’s not right,'” Montejo said.

Representatives from the group came into City Hall on Friday afternoon to pick up a new ward map, an updated list of polling places and a list of registered voters. They didn’t identify themselves, and Montejo said she didn’t recognize them.

Lewiston voters should go to one of five polling places Tuesday, depending on their wards. Voters in wards 1 and 3 should go to the Lewiston Armory on Central Avenue. Voters in wards 5 and 7 should go to the Multi-Purpose Center on Birch Street. Ward 2 voters should to Montello School; Ward 4 voters should go to the Hillview Community Building; and Ward 6 voters should go to the Elks Lodge on Lisbon Street.

Voters who are unsure of where to vote should contact the City Clerk’s office at 784-2956, extension 214.

Clerks will register voters and collect absentee ballots at their office in City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon today. The City Clerk’s Department is on the second floor of City Hall at 27 Pine St.
