PORTLAND – Liz Rosenberg scored two goals and Mallory Brown added three assists and a goal as Telstar captured the 2004 Class C state championship Saturday afternoon. The Rebels erupted for six goals in the first half en route to a convincing 6-0 shutout against Stearns at Fitzpatrick Stadium. It’s believed to be the most goals ever scored in a state field hockey game.
Telstar (16-1-1) hadn’t won a state crown since winning back-to-back titles in 78-’79. Telstar has won six regional crowns since 1989.
“We were really pumped up,” Brown said. “This was our first game for the team and we also wanted to win it for coach (Gail) Wight who has been here for a long time. Every one knew what had to be done.”
Telstar struck first, 6:43 into the game, when Rosenberg blasted a slap shot from the top of the circle. The ball whizzed past Stearns goalie Deanna Michaud, into the left corner of the cage.
The Rebels then scored two goals in three-minute span to take an 3-0 lead. Brown assisted on both plays, Kayla Mills scored on a crossing pass and Rosenberg one-timed a shot from eight yards.
“It feels great,” Rosenberg said, referring to winning the state game. “The turf definitely helped our passing game. We were able to use short passes to set things up.”
Stearns (13-6) was unable to generate any offensive thrust, as Hillary Arsenault and Holly Franck were completely sealed off. The Rebels halfbacks – Jen Farrington, Lindsay Hart and Rosenberg constantly intercepted loose balls.
“They did what they had to do,”coach Wight said. “They were accurate with their shots and passed it to an open teammate. The ball would roll a long way on long hits, so the short passes were more effective.”
Telstar goalies Stephanie Tripp and Heather Gionet only faced one shot in the game. Sweeper Jullian Kimball prevented any shots from getting close.
Farrington and freshman Bailey Davis each scored a goal.
“(Team) knew what we were getting in to,” Mills said. “It really helped practicing at Bates (College) because it gave us a feel on how to anticipate the path of the ball. I think Stearns adjusted by the second half, but we all played together today.”
