The one thing the Lewiston Maineiacs did not want to run into Sunday, one day after Chicoutimi shut them out, was a hot goaltender in Shawinigan.

Trick or treat Lewiston, you got it anyway.

Julien Ellis made 39 saves and the Shawinigan penalty kill unit held Lewiston scoreless on seven attempts as the Cataractes handed the Maineiacs their second straight shutout loss, 2-0, in front of 1,738 fans at the Centre Jacques-Plante.

“We played another great game,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “Playing hockey on the road in this league is hard. If we had not tried, had been outshot 60-20 or something like that, that would be one thing, but we weren’t.”

The Maineiacs’ futility on offense did not come without a lack of effort or chances. Several times in all three periods, Lewiston had chances to beat Ellis, and the Vancouver Canucks draft pick continued to stymie everyone that took a shot. Of the 39 shots he faced, 17 of them were listed as dangerous shots or scoring opportunities, and two of the bigger saves were against sniper Alexandre Picard from point blank range.

“We just could not buy a goal, no matter what we tried,” said Jodoin. “Ellis has been the key for them so far this season and he showed why again (Sunday). I don’t see this as a low point for us.”

Defensively, the only goal Lewiston netminder Jonathan Bernier allowed came with Shawinigan on the power play at 13:24 of the second period off the stick of Francis Pare, who converted on a pass from Benoit Mondou.

The other Shawinigan goal came with 25 seconds remaining in the game on an empty net after Bernier went to the bench for an extra skater.

Lewiston has now lost two straight games for the first time this season, and has now been shutout three times in five games.

“I am not worried about that,” said Jodoin. “You didn’t expect me to say that, I know, but really, we have played well. I am not panicked at all because of the way we are playing right now.”

The Maineiacs are now 2-5-3 on the road this season compared to 6-1-1 at home, and return to the Colisee for a single home game on Wednesday against Quebec before heading back out on the road for four more road contests.
