LEWISTON – Olivia Louise Straub, 97, died Friday, Oct. 29, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion.
She was born on Dec. 18, 1906 in Hamilton, N.Y., the third and youngest daughter of Louis P. and Clara (Bateman) Baum.
Her family moved to Mechanicsburg, a small town in south central Pennsylvania, where she lived for 87 years, prior to moving to Maine in May 1999 to be near her son.
In Mechanicsburg, she graduated as Valedictorian of her 1925 high school class.
In 1932, she married Ellwood B.F. Straub, who died in 1966.
While living in Mechanicsburg, she was an employee of the Department of Property and Supplies in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and served as financial bookkeeper for the Second National Bank, the Ryan Store, and the Rider Insurance Agency, all long-established former businesses in Mechanicsburg.
She was a longtime and faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, and a volunteer in several community non-profit organizations, including the local public library.
She is survived by her son; Carl Benton Straub, a member of the Faculty and former Vice President for Academic Affairs in Bates College; and by a niece, Lois Hollinger Morland, of Camp Hill, Penn.
