PARIS – The Board of Selectmen last week awarded $1,600 to social service agencies serving the area.

The Abused Women’s Advocacy Project and Androscoggin Home Health each received $425. Both agencies, noted the Social Service Committee, also receive funds from federal and state sources, collect fees for services and have fund-raising activities.

Other agencies to receive funding also receive additional assistance through a variety of means. The remaining awards went to:

• SeniorsPlus, $360.

• Western Maine Transportation Services, $290.

• Tri-County Mental Health Services, $100.

Families and Crisis, Maine Public Broadcasting and UCP were denied funding because they did not provide information required by the town.

Each year, the Social Service Committee requires that agencies requesting funding fill out a questionnaire. Organizations are asked information such as their funding sources, tax-exempt status and whether their services overlap with those provided by other groups.

In a memo to the Board of Selectmen, the Social Service Committee noted that it is “independent from the Budget Committee and has the basic responsibility that the United Way funding review committee has.” The questionnaire is used in order to provide a standard method of collecting information on social service agencies, the memo said.

Paris’ Social Service Committee members are Selectman Barbara Payne, Deb DeCato, Bob Jewell and Peter Kilgore.
