Heating oil topped $2 per gallon Monday, according to a survey of energy prices.

Maine’s State Planning Office found the statewide average price for No. 2 heating oil reached $2.01 per gallon, up 2 cents from a week ago and 72 cents more than the commodity cost a year ago.

That’s 31 cents higher than heating oil cost at the start of October.

Kerosene, at $2.30 per gallon statewide, rose 4 cents on the week and 79 cents from a year ago.

Propane reached $1.99 per gallon for bulk purchases, an 8-cent weekly increase and 43 cents more than the fuel cost last year at this time.

According to the SPO, New England heating oil inventories are 29 percent higher than their five-year average and 38 percent higher than a year ago.

The SPO also noted, however, that production by the nation’s refineries fell below 90 percent of their utilization rate this fall as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Ivan and the start of refinery maintenance season.

High crude oil prices are expected to encourage refinery production of distillates such as No. 2 and diesel fuel, the office said in its narrative accompanying release of the figures.
