LEWISTON – Get-out-the-vote efforts turned sour for Lewiston voters for the second time in less than a week.
An e-mail to Lewiston voters Monday morning from Georgebush.com included outdated information about city wards and polling places, said Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo.
“We called the local Republican office right away, to see if we could get them to retract the e-mail or issue a correction,” Montejo said. “Right now we’re afraid that the voters are just going to be so confused that they’re not going to know where to go.”
The city changed the map and polling places this summer and mailed postcards to registered voters to let them know where to go to vote.
On Friday, an unidentified group went door-to-door in Lewiston directing voters to the wrong polling places. Montejo said that group was using an old map and list of polling places. They picked up a new ward map, an updated list of polling places and a list of registered voters from the city on Friday.
Randy Bumps, executive director of Maine Bush-Cheney ’04, said he has not seen a copy of the offending e-mail. The national campaign had been sending e-mails nationwide urging people to vote, and he had requested that the campaign stop sending them to Maine in-boxes.
“At least, until they can be verified and any problems corrected,” Bumps said.
Bumps said his organization had updated information for 680 polling places in Maine as of Oct. 1 and didn’t know the source of the bad information.
“This is the only problem we’ve heard of,” Bumps said. “We have databases with thousands and thousands of names in them. My sense is that if it were more widespread, we would have heard from other places.”
Montejo said her staff was answering phone calls all day from confused voters.
“We’re telling them to just pay attention to our postcard,” Montejo said.
Lewiston voters should go to one of five polling places Tuesday, depending on their wards. Voters in Wards 1 and 3 should go to the Lewiston Armory on Central Avenue. Voters in Wards 5 and 7 should go to the Multi-Purpose Center on Birch Street. Ward 2 voters should to Montello School; Ward 4 voters should go to the Hillview Community Building; and Ward 6 voters should go to the Elks Lodge on Lisbon Street.
Voters who are unsure of where to vote should go to the city’s Web site, ci.lewiston.me.us and click on the “Election 2004 Information” link.
“The way the phones have been, we don’t think they’re going to have much luck getting through calling us,” Montejo said. “The best bet may be to use the Web site.”
