AUBURN – A late write-in candidate has won a seat on the school committee.

Robert Baskett, a psychologist and Lewiston-Auburn College professor, announced his plan to run for the open Ward 4 seat just days before the election. Baskett said he decided to enter when no other candidate stepped forward.

The Ward 4 seat is currently held by one-term representative Karen Bilodeau, but she decided not to seek re-election. No one filed papers by the deadline to become an official candidate, and no name appeared on the ballot.

To win, a write-in candidate must receive at least 25 votes from Auburn residents who correctly write their choice’s name and street address and fill in the oval on the ballot. Baskett recieved 57 votes.

If no write-in candidate had won, the City Council would have chosen the next Ward 4 representative.

Six incumbents ran unopposed for the other School Committee seats. They are Ward 1, Ross Leavitt; Ward 2, Justin Leary; Ward 3, Chairwoman Kathy Constantine; Ward 5, David Das; at large, Jane Williams and Theodore Belitsos.
