Incumbent Rep. Rodney Jennings, D-Leeds, claimed a second term in the Legislature to represent constituents in House District 81.

Jennings received 2,411 votes to 2,206 garnered by Republican challenger L. Gary Knight of Livermore Falls.

Jennings won narrowly in Livermore, and Wayne and took his hometown of Leeds by a vote of 716 votes to 401 votes. Knight took his hometown by an 824 to 669 vote.

“I’m just willing to try to do the best that I can to work for the people,” Jennings, a retired paper mill worker, said Wednesday.

Knight, a banker, said he called Jennings early Wednesday to congratulate him.

Knight said he found the experience to be exhilarating and exciting. “I was extremely pleased to get the support of my hometown,” Knight said.

He said he found most people to be very civil, warm and hospitable during his campaigning, with only four people being rude.

Knight said he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of running again.
