RUMFORD – No one attended a public hearing Wednesday night on the River Valley Growth Council’s plan to apply for a grant that would help clean up the former Diamond Match mill in Peru.
Plans are to ask for $200,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency. The funds would be used to clean up oil spills and remove any remaining asbestos from the 80,000-square-foot building complex.
Growth council Executive Director Scott Christiansen said the grant application is due Nov. 12. The growth council will know whether it was successful in getting the funding by May.
The mill is in a state Pine Tree Zone, which allows certain businesses who move into it a variety of tax breaks.
Also at Wednesday’s board meeting, the following members were reappointed: Diane Ray, Canton; Norine Clarke and Bill deVries, Dixfield; David Errington, Peru; and Matt Kaubris, Rumford.
The assistant to the executive director, Rosie Bradley, reported that the River Valley Expo in September netted the growth council and the River Valley Chamber of Commerce just over $11,500, which will go toward next year’s event.
