CLAREMONT, N.H. (AP) – Police say the man charged with hitting a Claremont toddler with his truck, then driving away, tried to throw them off his trail by phoning in a fake tip.

But they say real tips from witnesses and someone who had been in the truck led to the arrest of Jermie Kline, 26, of Unity.

The little boy, 2-year-old Daemon Kennison, is in fair condition after being hit outside his home this week.

Police say Kline was on parole after being released from prison during the summer after serving time for a firearms conviction. They say he did not stay at the scene because he feared he would end up back in prison. Now he’s charged with leaving the scene of an accident, not reporting an accident and interfering with the investigation.
