VESTAL, N.Y. – Marie-Andree Canuel notched the eventual game-winner as Maine advanced to the America East championship game with a 2-0 win over New Hampshire in women’s soccer action Friday.
Canuel opened the scoring for the Black Bears (13-5-1) in the 60th minute when she headed the ball past the keeper. Maine added an insurance goal 10 minutes later with a conversion from Erin Corey to Heather Hathorn, who was able to beat the keeper on a slash in front of the goal.
Maine keeper Tanya Adorno earned the shutout victory, while Lynn Gugliuzza made six saves for the Wildcats (11-7-2).
Keene State 3, Southern Maine 2
KEENE, N.H. – Sophomore midfielder Courtney Gately bagged the game-winner out of a scramble in front of the net in sudden death overtime as Keene State edged the University of Southern Maine 3-2 in women’s soccer action Friday.
The two sides battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, before the Owls (12-5-2) broke the stalemate with a goal in the 67th minute from Katie Stevens. The lead doubled ten minutes later with a blast from freshman Renee Halsey.
The Huskies (8-8-4) began to scratch back with 10 minutes to play as junior forwards Liz Brunton and Eva Hanson nailed goals to send the match into overtime.
Field hockey
Northeastern 2, Maine 1
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lauren Edelmeier scored a pair of goals on penalty corners to snap up a Northeastern 2-1 win over the University of Maine in field hockey action Friday.
The Black Bears (12-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally from Rachael Hilgar, her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Huskies (16-3) controlled the offensive momentum throughout the game, while the defense intensified in the second half to limit Maine to one shot. Norheastern’s penalty corner unit of Edelmeier, Natalie Singelais and Whitney Sean combined to tie the game and pull ahead for the victory.
