Laich shot from just outside of the crease as Portland pressed around Worcester goalie Curtis Sanford.
The loss snapped the IceCats’ six-game winning streak and was their first loss on home ice this season. They had won their first five home games.
Owen Fussey, Trent Whitfield and Michel Periard had the other Portland goals. Steve Eminger had a pair of assists.
All three Worcester goals came in the third period from Brendan Brooks, Peter Sejna and Jon DiSalvatore. Dennis Wideman had two assists.
Portland led by 3-1 before Sejna and DiSalvatore scored a minute apart to tie it midway through the third period.
Saves by Pirates goaltender Maxime Ouellet sent it into overtime, where Laich got the winner.
