LEWISTON – The city of Lewiston is applying to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for cleanup and assessment grants. A public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. today to review and discuss the draft grant applications. The meeting will be held in the Administrative Conference Room at City Hall at 27 Pine St.

Cleanup grants are for sites that were once used for industrial, manufacturing or commercial uses that are lying abandoned or underused due to the suspicion of hazardous substance contamination. The EPA’s Brownfield Grant Program is designed to help communities identify sites, evaluate the level of contamination, and clean up sites so they can be put them back into productive use. Lewiston has been successful in previous cleanup grant applications. The funds have been used at the Bates Mill, Libby Mill, Androscoggin Mill and other sites around the city.
