LEWISTON – Jamie Walker ran for a career-high 181 yards and two touchdowns and Jason Moody had a pair of interceptions to lift Bates to a 37-13 win over Hamilton on Saturday.
Hamilton (1-7) jumped to a 7-0 lead on Matt Pitarresi’s 31-yard interception return, but the Bobcats (2-6) responded by posting 37 points in a row.
With Bates leading 17-7 and less than a minute remaining in the first half, Eric Obeng blocked a Hamilton field goal attempt and Mike Horan returned it 74 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown.
Tha Bates defense held the Continentals to 17 yards rushing, recording five sacks.
Colby 23, Bowdoin 0
WATERVILLE – Justin Smith passed for 172 yards and two touchdowns and Chris Bashaw rushed for 130 yards on 30 carries as Colby beat Bowdoin 23-0 Saturday.
The Mules finished their season at 6-2 under first-year coach Ed Mestieri and won the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) championship for the second year in a row. Bowdoin dropped to 2-6.
Smith threw touchdown passes of 39 yards to Michael Tomich in the second period and 12 yards to Roddy Ames in the fourth period. Nial DeMena’s 1-yard scoring run capped a 61-yard drive in the third period.
Bowdoin running back Rob Patchett rushed 27 times for 91 yards.
Maine 42, URI 28
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Marcus Williams rushed for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Maine past Rhode Island, 42-28, on Saturday.
The Black Bears (5-5, 3-4 Atlantic 10) led 14-0 at halftime after a 30-yard fumble recovery run by linebacker Anthony Hicks in the first quarter, and a 4-yard run by tailback Montell Owens midway through the second quarter.
Williams, who became Maine’s career rushing leader, scored on a 37-yard sprint to the end zone in the opening moments of the third quarter, pushing Maine’s advantage to 21-0. He added a 6-yard TD run in the third.
Rhode Island (4-6, 2-5) got on the scoreboard with a Jerrell Jones 15-yard TD run at the start of the fourth quarter.
Jason Ham, who ran for 126 yards on 14 carries, made it 27-14 when he scored on a 2-yard plunge with 10:48 to play.
Rhode Island pulled within 27-21 three minutes later when D.J. Porter ran two yards for a touchdown.
But then Arel Gordon returned the kickoff 97 yards to give the Black Bears a 35-21 lead.
The teams traded touchdowns in the final minutes.
Ron Whitcomb was 13 of 16 passes for 178 yards for Maine.
Maine limited Rhode Island to 14 yards passing and 336 yards of total offense in the game.
Men’s basketball
UMFK 87, CMCC 76
FORT KENT – Bartas Samaitis scored a team-high 19 points to lead the University of Maine at Machias to an 87-76 win over the Central Maine Community College in men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Clippers (1-2) jumped out to a 45-34 at the half. The Mustangs (2-1) tried to surge in the second half, but came up even with a 42-42 performance.
Patrick Dempsey had the game-high 20 points for the Mustangs, while Chris Rainville tallied 15, Mike Graham 15, Kaleb Violette 11 and Kevin Bean 11 in the loss.
Women’s basketball
UMM 63, CMCC 47
FORT KENT – Kelley Welles and Sara Kicker shared team-high scoring with 12 points apiece in a well-balanced offensive effort as the University of Maine at Machias took a 63-47 win over the Central Maine Community College in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Bengals (2-2) spread the offensive effort all around as 10 different players participated with at least one point in the winning effort.
The Mustangs (0-2) bounced back in the second half, but managed to only play even. Ashley Swett notched the game-high 20 points, while Auburn’s Katherine Vincent tallied 13 points.
Girls’ soccer
Gould 1, Kents Hill 0
READFIELD – Carley Rudd found the back of the net just four minutes into the game, drilling the ball from the 18, to give Gould Academy 1-0 victory over Kents Hill in the MAISAD soccer championship Saturday afternoon.
Brianna Noyes closed the door on the Kents Hill attack with 13 saves to register the shutout, while Suzanne Small turned back seven shots in the loss.
Football
Portsmouth Abbey 22, Hebron 14
HEBRON – John Bay had a pair of outstanding runs of 91 and 50 yards to lead Portsmouth Abbey to a 22-14 win over Hebron Academy in football action Saturday.
The Huskies (5-2-1) scored twice in the second quarter in catch-up fashion, but succumbed in the second half when the Abbey’s (6-1-1) managed to shut them out 8-0.
Hebron’s Nasir Yard scored a touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Zack Cavanaugh, and Cavanaugh scored on a quarterback sneak. Krusch successfully kicked both points.
