Katie LePage, who completed a successful career by scoring the winning goal as Skowhegan rallied for a 3-2 triumph against previously unbeaten Bonny Eagle in the Class A field hockey state championship game, has earned the 2004 Sun Journal Player of the Year honor.

It was the fourth-straight state crown for LePage and the Indians senior class.

“Katy is a team player,” Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty said. “She’s always supportive of other teammates. She was a positive role model.” The four-year varsity starter utilized outstanding stick work to stand out on the Skowhegan front line.

LePage scored a season-record 32 goals in 2004 and is the second-highest scorer in Skowhegan field hockey history with 59 goals and 29 assists for 147 career points. LePage also was named to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first team.

She is a four-year member of the Maine Event team and is the captain this year.

The Events team competes in a national tournament in Florida every November.

Lepage, Nicole Emery of Winthrop; Bronwyn Potthoff of Deering, Laura Nimon of Gardner and Julia Chase of Greely are each finalists for Miss Maine this year, through the Maine Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Emery earned SJ first team honors, following a solid season.

She scored 25 goals and ranks second on the all-time Winthrop scoring list.

Emery earned a strong reputation as an offensive sniper and was the center of attention by opposing teams. She scored all four of the Ramblers goals in the tournament and has 59 career goals. She had several hat tricks, and tallied four goals in two games.

“Her own motto could be there’s always room for improvement,” Winthrop coach Sharon Coulton said. “Nicole sets very high standards for herself in many areas, field hockey included. She is, however, also very much a team player. Whether it’s practice drills, game strategy or fun activities for the team, she is always thinking about ways to make things better for everyone.”

Winthrop won its third straight Mountain Valley Conference championship and was a regional finalist in 2004.

Allen Holmes is the SJ Coach of the Year after guiding Belfast to an unbeaten season en route to winning the Class B championship. Holmes has coached for more than three decades and is the active leader in Maine with 338 wins.
