We are writing in response to Lance Harvell’s comments questioning the activities of UMF’s student organizations on Election Day (Nov. 9). As members spearheading the Farmington chapter of the League of Pissed Off Voters, we were nothing but thrilled to have an over 75 percent UMF voter turnout, more than 600 of which voted here in Farmington.
Harvell fails to acknowledge the benefit his campaign reaped from UMF voters, who got to the polls by the work of several UMF student organizations, the same organizations that he’s now accusing of questionable practices. Many UMF students threw their support to Harvell because they related to him as a fellow student, regardless of party affiliation. We honestly feel that the race would not have been as close in Harvell’s favor had it not been for UMF’s voter turnout.
The League of Pissed Off Voters is a national organization founded to encourage young people to get involved in politics. It is officially nonpartisan, though some chapters of the League do choose to support progressive candidates.
The UMF chapter, however, consciously chose to not endorse any candidates during this election.
