JAY – North Jay Water District trustees are holding a special meeting Tuesday to hear comments and take action on borrowing up to $64,000 to relocate a water main on Maxwell Road.

The existing water main is located under a residential septic system, which violates state laws. The district, the town of Jay and Maxwell Road resident Clover Johnson York are embroiled in a lawsuit over the matter.

“It’s the best resolution,” Water District Superintendent Richard Jackson said.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Water District at 1 Mountain View St. in North Jay The project calls for the relocation of about 1,060 feet of 8-inch water main, which would bring the district into compliance.

“Everything is going to be in the state right-of-way,” Jackson said.

The project will start about 600 feet from the intersection of Route 4 and it’s going to proceed up the left side of Route 4 to connect to the existing line, he said.

The district plans to pay for the project using $30,000 in urgent need grant funds from state Department of Economic and Community Development Community and with district generated revenue.

“North Jay Water District customers would not be affected by rate hikes,” he said.

The district plans to take out a one-year bank loan from Androscoggin Bank for the project.

E.L. Vining & Son won the bid for the project, Jackson said, and is expected to start next week.

“We don’t expect water shutoffs until the end of the project when the lines are connected,” he said.
