LEWISTON – Lewiston-Auburn College will host a post-election debate on international and homeland security at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18.
The debate, titled “America: More or Less Secure?” was organized by the World Affairs Council of Maine.
This forum is part of a 2004 debate series in nine U.S. cities sponsored by the Fourth Freedom Forum, the Stanley Foundation’s Strategies for National Security Program and the World Affairs Councils of America.
Speakers will present opposing views on national security issues and respond to questions from the audience. This event will be held during International Education Week and teachers and students are invited to attend as special guests.
The guest debaters will be Lawrence Korb and Christopher Preble. Joseph Wood, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern Maine, will serve as the moderator.
Korb is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a senior adviser to the Center for Defense Information. Before joining the center, he was a senior fellow and director of National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Korb was assistant secretary of defense during the Reagan administration.
Christopher Preble is director of foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War and is completing a book, “John F. Kennedy and the Missile Gap,” which examines the political and economic roots of the missile gap controversy of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The debate will be held in Room 170 at L-A College, 51 Westminster St. in Lewiston. The debate will also be held at Portland High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17.
