LEWISTON – Police on Monday were searching for a man suspected of breaking into a woman’s apartment, binding her with tape and raping her while her 5-month-old child slept nearby.

Investigators said the attack took place about 2 p.m. Sunday. The woman reported that a man forced his way into her second-floor home on Pine Street and overpowered her. He used tape to immobilize the woman before the sexual assault occurred.

The victim was physically as well as sexually assaulted, police said. She was examined at a hospital and later released. The child was not hurt.

The woman reported the attack after the man had fled. The victim did not know the man who attacked her, police said.

Detectives interviewed the victim, and on Monday prepared a composite sketch of the suspect based on her description.

Police in Lewiston and the surrounding area were on the lookout for the man, described as 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds or more. The victim said the man appeared to be in his mid-20s and that he had dark hair and a partial beard.

She also told police the attacker was wearing a waist-length black leather jacket, jeans, black gloves and a tan, fisherman-type hat.

By late Monday, no arrest had been made in the attack. Police were asking that anyone with information about the assault or the suspect call Detective James Theiss at 795-9000, extension 233.
