SABATTUS – The town of Sabattus will see something it has not seen in 10 years.
The members of the Tax Cap Committee, established to help deal with the proposed Palesky tax cap, went before selectmen Tuesday night seeking to become a budget committee to help advise taxpayers, department heads and selectmen of ways to reduce the town’s budget and mill rate.
The board approved the move and stipulated that the budget committee have eight members.
Committee member Joline Vanover is excited about the transition and said filling the eight-person requirement would be easy.
“We figure that if we were going to make cuts to help deal with Palesky, then why can’t we do cuts to help reduce our taxes?” Vanover said. “Even the selectmen agree every department can be cut. We would like to see our mill rate drop to around 18.”
The committee’s main goal is to keep in touch with each town department head and discover ways in which to help it cut corners and reduce costs. “We’ll just start our way from the top and work our way down,” she said.
Selectmen Chair Rudy Gayton said the town once had a budget committee, but due to differences it had to disband. She said she had no problem with the budget committee’s revival and hopes it will bring new ideas for cutting the budget.
