PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Two-time PGA Tour winner Olin Browne, Kelli Kuehne of the LPGA and two-time collegiate champion JJ Jakovac shot 6-under 66s Thursday to share the lead after the first round of the Pebble Beach Invitational.
Browne, the 2001 tournament winner who was 127th on this year’s money list, had seven birdies and completed his round with a bogey.
“I didn’t do much on the front nine, so I was cranky on the back nine,” Browne said. “I got five birdies on the back nine, so the round finished well for me.”
Kuehne, winless on her tour since her only victory in 1999, had eight birdies and two bogeys. Kuehne, whose best 2004 finish was fourth at the Sybase Classic last May, finished 60th on the LPGA money list.
Jakovac, who played in college at NCAA Division II Chico State University, had six birdies and no bogeys.
The tournament includes 54 pros from the PGA, LPGA, Champions and Nationwide tours, as well as mini-tour players, club pros and amateurs.
The 72-hole event is being played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Del Monte Golf Course.
The co-leaders played at Del Monte, considered the easiest of the three courses. Distance advantages are given on tee shots to LPGA and Champions Tour players.
Tom Lehman, the recently named 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, leads a group of six golfers who shot 68. The group at 4-under also includes Tom Purtzer, who posted the low score among the five Champions Tour entrants.
Former tournament winners Kirk Triplett and Mark Brooks, and former PGA Championship winner Rich Beem are among 10 players at 69.
Jill McGill, Emilee Klein and Beth Bauer also shot 69s, tying for the second-best scores among the 14 LPGA players.
Jim Thorpe, who tied for second last year, withdrew from the tournament citing back problems.
The tournament continues through Sunday, with the top 40 pros and ties advancing to the final round at Pebble Beach.
The winner of the event sponsored by Callaway Golf will earn $60,000 from a purse of $300,000.
