Many Auburn residents will miss Joe DeFilipp on the Auburn City Council.

He should be commended for standing up for what he believed in. He advocated and supported the first tax reduction in 20 years. While serving as a councilor, he also served on the Auburn Public Library Committee, the L/A Railroad Board of Directors, the Auburn Sewer District Board, the L/A College Board and the Auburn Housing Authority Board of Directors.

He had a vision for Auburn and strongly supported the ADAPT Plan for Auburn’s downtown redevelopment. He realized the need to attract people to our wonderful city. He also voted for the expansion of ELHS and the new school to replace the Lake Street school, while keeping the tax level rise at less than the increase in the Consumer Price Index and reducing the city’s bonded indebtedness, while at the same time, maintaining city services at a high level.

He worked hard for Auburn, and he did this while working a full-time job and raising his family.

With his masters degree in education, Mr. DeFilipp could have gone anywhere and done anything. Because of his vision for the development of Auburn, we will reap the benefits for years to come. He deserves to be commended for the fine job he did while serving our city, as well as for the integrity he has shown. I’m sure the person who replaced him will do a good job, but Joe has left big shoes to fill.
