I have been told to compose letters as if I were speaking to the editor. Which one? The condescending liberal or the logic-challenged right-winger? Or the ueber-editor (Rex Rhoades) who, acting as columnist, recently (Nov. 7) delivered a Sunday sermon on morality, spluttering until blue in the face? Pun intended.

It is obvious who was the big loser in the election.

Not John Kerry. Unless their prenuptial agreement has a political performance clause, he can go sulk at one of his wife’s mansions and then resume his career of doing nothing in the Senate. Maybe the people of Massachusetts will wise up by 2008, but don’t hold your breath.

Not the Democratic Party. They are all deep in denial, blaming the messenger instead of the message, or embracing silly conspiracy theories.

Not the American people. We lost a precious resource, but it is being replaced by another that is much more efficient. Ask Dan Rather whose face should be bright red. Pun intended.

The big loser is that resource, the old media, represented locally by the Sun Journal, nationally by the New York Times and the alphabet TV news organizations. Like their predecessors 60 million years ago, these dinosaurs believe they will live forever because the world needs them so desperately.

My corner of the world needs journalism with a small “j.”

Red? Blue? Stick white between them and get on with it.
