I am writing in response to the letters “Apologize” and “Sadness” that appeared in the opinion section of the Sun Journal Nov. 10. I preface this statement by saying that Mr. Rex Rhoades (Nov. 7) blundered when he resorted to name-calling in an effort to make his frustration known to the readers of the Sun Journal, and that his mistake is noted.

What concerns me so deeply is that anyone is so uninformed as to believe that the morality that is espoused by the Christian faith does and should make up the foundation of this nation’s moral structure. Morality and religion, be it Christianity, Islam or Hinduism for that matter, are not identical and should not be confused. Because a religion claims an action or a belief to be right or wrong is not justification to say it is or is not.

As an example, if that were the case, then it would be not only legitimate to believe that Muslim nations have the moral capacity to restrict women’s rights in their nations because God says its OK, it would be the righteous thing to do according to their scriptures. Meaning: It is right and noble and though you may not agree, it won’t matter because you are the infidel and are misled by your blasphemous religion into believing things that are not true.

If religious ideals become the basis for morality then all we are left with is cultural relativism.
