DIXFIELD – A Rumford man is recovering at home from a fractured pelvis sustained late Friday afternoon while doing routine maintenance work at a Dixfield sawmill.
Kevin Hynes, general manager of Irving Forest Products Inc.’s Dixfield sawmill operation, said Tuesday in an e-mailed press release that millwright Berl Nisbet, 41, had been treated and released from a Lewiston hospital.
“Berl is expected to make a full recovery,” Hynes stated.
Hynes said the accident occurred at 4:20 p.m. Friday when Nisbet became caught between two guards while closing the mill’s gang edger.
Nisbet was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital, then by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Nisbet, Hynes said, is an experienced millwright, who has worked for the company since 1983. He said the accident was investigated by the mill’s Dixfield management team and a safety committee, and several recommendations were made to prevent such an incident from occurring again.
Hynes said the mill did not lose any time due to the accident, which happened after operations had been shut down for the weekend.
The mill, he added, had been accident-free since August, when a loader operator injured his ankle while exiting the machine.
