AUBURN – A local man was critically injured Wednesday when he was struck by a car while walking across Court Street in late afternoon traffic.
Rick Ernest Burnham, 22, was being treated for multiple injuries at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A nursing supervisor there said she could not release any information about Burnham’s condition Wednesday night.
Lt. Timothy Cougle described his injuries as life-threatening.
Cougle said Burnham was crossing at Court and Goff streets about 5 p.m. when he was struck by a car driven by 72-year-old Barbara Lynn of Auburn.
Burnham was walking with his girlfriend, not far from his Court Street home, when he was hit, the lieutenant said. The woman was examined but did not suffer serious injuries.
The crash remained under investigation Wednesday night. Cougle said Burnham was wearing dark clothes when he was struck. The sun had set and falling rain added to the problem of visibility, police said. Heavy traffic was also believed to have been a factor.
No charges were filed in the accident. Lynn was turning from Goff onto Court Street.
The crash snarled traffic at the lower end of Court Street as police and rescue crews made their way to the scene. At the time, most police officers were on Main Street in New Auburn, where a tractor-trailer had crashed into a utility pole, downing wires and knocking out power.
