PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – Investigators say they have identified a new witness to an incident in which members of the New Hampshire Drug Task Force are accused of assaulting an off-duty Portsmouth police officer and another man.

Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams had hoped to complete his investigation of the incident by next week, but said this week’s discovery of an additional witness will delay that.

Portsmouth police Chief Michael Magnant has said the officers allegedly assaulted the Portsmouth officer and a civilian at two restaurants last St. Patrick’s Day.

Reams declined to say whether he will seek an indictments related to the case.

“I’m still shooting to finalize the investigation and make decisions,” he said.

A separate investigation to determine whether members of the task force violated any of its own regulations is being conducted by the state attorney general’s office.

Meanwhile, Magnant said his department is quitting the task force, which is made up of police officers from departments throughout the state. He said the Portsmouth officer assigned to it would be put to better use in the city’s detective division.

“I no longer felt we were getting the benefit out of it that we should be getting,” he said.

Magnant said his decision also was partially due to the assault allegations.

Portsmouth Police are expected to stay on the force until the end of the year.
