PORTLAND – Joseph “Marcel” Richard, 72, died Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was a resident of Knox Street in Rumford.

Born in Rumford, on Dec. 9, 1931, he was a son of the late Eli and Alma (Poirier) Richard.

He was a graduate of Berthierville High School in Quebec, Canada.

He served in the United Sates Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He owned and operated J.M. Richard Lawn & Garden Home Maintenance in Rumford for many years.

Marcel was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church where he was very active in the church choir. He was a member of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion; Rumford Falls Aerie 1248, FOE; 4th Degree member of Fr. Ambrose J. Barry Council 2091, K of C.

He enjoyed fishing, cribbage, flower gardens, and he loved his family.

He was married in Waltham, Mass., on Sept. 21, 1957, to Andrea M. Bastarache, who survives of Rumford.

Other survivors include a daughter; Sara Richard, of Woolwich; and a son, Mark Richard and his wife, Tammy, of Falmouth; four grandchildren, Molly and Samuel Willwerth, of Windham, Danielle Dicks, of Falmouth, and Benjamin Richard, of Falmouth; two sisters, Evangeline “Van” Nolkemper, of Hartford, and Sr. Marie Therese Richard Sr., of Providence, of Winooski, Vt.; two brothers, Gerard Richard and his wife, Helen, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and John Richard and his wife, Maria, of Cape Canaveral, Fla.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene and Paul; and a sister, Ida May Richard.
