WEST PARIS – Evelyn “Diddy” Johnson, 83, of Greenwood, died Nov. 28, at Ledgeview Nursing Home, after a brief and sudden illness.

Born in Greenwood, May 3, 1921, the daughter of Peter and Laura Cole Seames, she lived her whole life in the Howe Hill area of town.

She loved to play baseball, fish, hunt, watch baseball on TV, attend school sporting events, fry doughnuts, bake pies and best of all, gather her family every week for a sit-down dinner.

She watched every game of every World Series and after the 2004 win last month, was asked what she thought, said “The Red Sox are okay but I’m still a Yankees fan.”

She had a vocal opinion on most things that concerned her and was not afraid to share it. She was well-known in the area as a successful water dowser and spent countless hours in the kitchen baking and cooking for friends, family and those in need. Earlier in her career she had worked at Ecko Wood Products, but was better known for her large presence behind the counter at Bob’s Corner Store on Rte. 26 until her retirement.

She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Johnson and wife, Doreen of Bryant Pond and James Johnson of Greenwood; three grandchildren, Betsy Barton of Mill Valley, Calif., Jamie Hastings of Greenwood and Alex Johnson of West Paris; the “light of her life,” Colby James Hastings, her new great-grandchild; three brothers, Peter and wife, Elsie Seames of Greenwood, Raymond and wife, Louise Seames of Kingfield and William Seames of Woodstock; stepchildren, Charles Johnson and wife, Wanda of Greenwood, Gerald Johnson and wife, Virginia of Bryant Pond and Gloria Robinson and husband, Rob of Greenwich, Conn. and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar Johnson in 1984; her brother, Stanley Seames and her parents.
