SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – The state’s shotgun deer season opened Monday.

The two-week season runs through Dec. 11 across most of the state, with no hunting allowed on Sundays. Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard have a six-day season ending Saturday.

State biologists estimate that there are more than 85,000 whitetails in the state, and about 60,000 licensed deer hunters.

Over the past decade, hunters have killed between 9,132 and 12,417 deer annually during the state’s archery, shotgun and muzzleloader seasons.

Last year shotgun hunters took 58 percent of the 12,053 deer killed, with archers taking 26 percent and muzzleloader hunters taking 16 percent.

The muzzleloader season runs from Dec. 13 through Dec. 31, with no hunting allowed on Sundays. The archery season ran from Oct. 11 to Nov. 20.
