In my mind, the Cabinet position most needing change is Donald Rumsfeld’s. Our military strategy couldn’t be worse. Visualize five soldiers on a rooftop in Fallujah tonight. Dressed up as they are, they make great targets.

When the Senate gets to review the president’s nomination of Condoleezza Rice for secretary of state, they might want to suggest she replace Rumsfeld instead. She has two important things going for her. She clearly has the support of the president, and she is smart enough to let the military fight the war. Let’s give Condie a try.

In my opinion, the more important post is that of homeland security. Maybe Susan Collins is the kind of person needed there. The security of the homeland is a product of the towns and cities of this great nation. We can’t expect Tom Ridge or any other person from away to do it for us. We need someone in charge in Washington who can help local folks figure out what we need in order for our homeland to continue to be one of the more secure places in the world to live and to see that the resources are redirected from Washington for that purpose.
