Regarding Hartford’s special town meeting, I congratulate Terry Hayes of Buckfield on the terrific job she did as moderator. She held a tight rein and kept the meeting on task. A less experienced person might have allowed the meeting to disintegrate into a petty, even threatening spectacle, like that witnessed at a selectmen’s meeting in September.

It’s a wonder the town isn’t facing multiple lawsuits from that night’s events.

I’m more than a little surprised by the former town clerk’s audacity in using the meeting to campaign for the job she just walked out on. Does she really think we’ll vote her back into that position?

I’m proud of our town in voting to allow the community goodwill suppers to use the town hall without charge. My hope is that Chairman Swain and Selectman Marston will stop trying to hijack democracy with improperly called meetings and unauthorized votes and realize that the majority of the townspeople see the suppers as a good thing, a wonderful way to get to know our neighbors in fellowship and goodwill.

How can that be controversial?
