NORWAY – Town officials reiterated their support for the C.B. Cummings Mill redevelopment project at a meeting Thursday.
Members of the Norway Board of Selectmen spoke on the matter after Town Manager David Holt announced a public hearing on grants that may be used for mill improvements.
“I think the whole board agrees it’s important to try and do something with the C.B. Cummings site,” Selectman Russell Newcomb said. He warned against incurring debt while helping with the project, however.
Holt said the town has so far committed only revolving grant money to the project. Norway does not own the property, he said. “I think the reason that the board cares about (the mill) is they’d like to see some jobs, they’d like to see some property tax revenue.”
Three public hearings will be held by the board Dec. 16. The first will address the Oxford County Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan. The remaining hearings will cover grant applications for improvements to the mill and other downtown areas.
The Downtown Redevelopment Corp. will hold an informational meeting on the mill project at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the town office. More information may be obtained by calling the redevelopment corporation at 743-8830.
