WILTON – Town Manager Peter Nielsen will discuss with selectmen correspondence that the town has received from the Franklin County district attorney’s office when they meet Tuesday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town office.
A subcommittee also plans to meet Wednesday to review applications for a new police chief. Nielsen said it is likely that they will meet behind closed doors.
Last month a resident questioned the legality of an executive session that was held to discuss the performance of the Wilton Police Department. The resident said he feels the public has the right to know why the department is being investigated.
Selectmen agreed that evening to hire the Maine Chiefs of Police Association to evaluate the department. Selectmen also asked that interim Police Chief Ed Leahy follow up on information the town received from the Franklin County district attorney’s office regarding the department.
Nielsen said at that meeting that the decision to review the department, and the information from the DA’s office, are two separate issues. He said town officials would need to clarify whether the information should be considered a complaint. If it is considered a complaint, that may make it public information, he said.
In other business, selectmen will certify information that will be submitted with a grant application to extend town water to Bennett and Thompson streets.
Last month selectmen authorized Nielsen to apply for an $80,000 Community Development Block Grant to extend the town’s water line to homes on those streets with contaminated wells and take any other needed monies from the water department budget. The grant requires a 25 percent match in local monies.
Officials will also meet with Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments business development specialist Sarah Doscinski, who will discuss sponsoring a revolving loan fund through the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program.
Selectmen plan to accept the resignation of Code Enforcement Officer Katharine Shoaps and make plans to fill the position. Shoaps has been absent for some time due to a family emergency. Shoaps replaced Brenda Medcoff in April.
Officials will also hear a report from state Rep. Tom Saviello on the governor’s property tax reform proposal.
