AVON – SAD 58 Community Education will offer its first-ever introductory bricklaying course beginning Jan. 5 at the newly established Opportunity Center of North Franklin County on Avon Valley Road.

The masonry apprentice course will run every Wednesday for 12 weeks from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The instructor is Steve Mitchell. The cost of the course is $200 per student for residents of the area served by SAD 58, and $300 per student for those from areas outside SAD 58. Class size is limited to 16 students.

This course will cover tools, history, materials and career possibilities in the trade. Students will learn about safety, brick manufacturing, basic mortar mixtures, bricklaying and how to complete estimates for small jobs.

There is no age restriction.

Participants will be expected to complete a small community service project using their newly acquired skills. Students will also complete a collaborative community project at the Opportunity Center that will then be taken to its final destination in the spring.
