WEST PELZER, S.C. (AP) – Three men were killed Thursday when their single-engine plane crashed in rainy weather in a rural area of northwestern South Carolina.

The plane, en route from Jacksonville, Fla., to Anderson Regional Airport, had been diverted to an airfield in nearby Greenville, according to the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta.

It crashed in a field behind a house, a few miles from Greenville.

A coroner said Anderson business partners Harry Alton “Chip” Moore, 52, and Brian Winstead, 46, were killed, along with Scott Burdick, 43, of Greer.

Moore and Burdick, a flight instructor, were pilots. It was not clear who was flying the plane.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the plane hit trees and a power line as it crashed, leaving a 500-yard stretch of debris in the field.

The plane was registered to Accu-Pad Inc., a small company owned by Moore and Winstead that made silicon print pads.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
