A Turner soldier who was injured while on his way to a Colorado airport to fly home for Thanksgiving has been placed back in critical condition.

Spc. Mico Morin had been earlier upgraded to serious condition at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. On Friday, however, his condition was downgraded back to critical, said Kimberly Langston, the hospital’s spokeswoman.

Morin suffered multiple injuries when the car he and two other GIs from Fort Carson, Colo., went out of control and flipped several times on Interstate 25 about 15 miles south of Castle Rock, Colo., on Nov. 22.

Morin, 22, was tossed from the car. He suffered neck and back fractures, collapsed lungs and other injuries according to his twin sister, Nancy Morin.

A passenger in the car, Spc. Sara Richardson, 22, of Wheatland, Mo., was killed in the wreck. The driver, Spc. Dan Schroth, 22, of Beaver Falls, Pa., was seriously hurt in the crash.

The soldiers were members of Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. They had served together for a year’s deployment in Iraq, and were to return to Iraq for a second year of duty this coming spring, according to Fort Carson officials.

Morin grew up in North Turner. He’s a 2001 graduate of Leavitt Area High School.

At stores throughout Turner jars have been placed near cash registers to accept contributions intended to help offset costs associated with Morin’s hospitalization.

Langston said people can e-mail messages to Morin by going to www.swedishhospital.com, click on “patient resources” then on “e-mail a patient” then follow instructions.

She said messages are delivered to patients at least once a day.
