LIVERMORE FALLS – When Doug Lisherness sends in substitutes midway through each quarter, it’s a good sign for Mt. Abram if the players on the court need the break.
That was the case Tuesday night. The Roadrunners started playing at full throttle and never let up in a 54-38 win over Livermore Falls.
“When we were doing our press we felt that it was very fast paced,” said Lynn Plog. “We were kind of glad that Doug was putting us in every five minutes because it got a little bit too fast sometimes.”
If it was hard on the Roadrunners, imagine how the Andies felt. The frantic pace had Livermore Falls struggling to keep up. The Andies had over 40 turnovers and couldn’t answer a run that allowed Mt. Abram to break the game open.
“We had 20 something turnovers at Telstar,” said Andies coach Frank Donald. “We want to play at that kind of pace. That what our goal is, but we have to take care of the ball better.”
With both teams coming off losses, neither wanted to start 0-2. After losing to Jay Saturday, the Roadrunners pulled out all the stops.
“We really wanted to rebound from that Jay game,” said Plog. “We definitely wanted to win today. We really picked up the intensity in that game. Everybody did and everybody picked it up, and we all felt good about it.”
Plog led the Roadrunners with 13 points while Brianna Wilkins had 11. Taryn Flagg led the Andies with 16.
“That’s the kind of intensity that I’ve been seeing out of them,” said Lisherness. “That’s what we have to do. The more we play with that intensity, the turnovers will start to diminish and the bunnies that we’re missing will start going down.”
Though Donald, who coached with Lisherness for three years, knew what to expect and warned his players, the Roadrunners press finally got to the Andies. After a back-and-forth game for much of the first half, Mt. Abram burst ahead late in the half for a 31-25 lead.
“With that press they’re going to make you go where you don’t want to go and make you do where you don’t want to do,” said Donald.
A jumper by Wilkins and free throws from Logahn Walker and Brittany York broke a tie late in the first half. The lead quickly surged to double digits early in the third as Livermore Falls missed its first nine shots.
” I think we had good pressure,” said Lisherness. “Even when we weren’t getting turnovers, we had good pressure, and we were really making them work.”
Plog scored on a layup and a fast break to start the second half. Then Danielle Bisson hit a jumper for a 37-25 lead. Livermore Falls didn’t get a point until 3:11 remained in the third quarter. Though Flagg got hot with eight of the Andies final 13 points, it wasn’t enough.
“We’ve got a couple of kids that aren’t used to being in that step-up kind of role,” said Donald. “We’re starting only one senior, and we’re still young. We’re still in that learning curve as far as where and when and making decisions.”
